How To Launch a Website with No Tech Skills Required!

Welcome to Lesson 4 of Affiliate-101’s free introductory course. So far, we’ve taken a look at how affiliate marketing works, outlined the reasons why you’re interested in building a business online, as well as looked at a few of the most common myths and realities of what it takes to be successful with affiliate marketing.

By this point, you should also be well on your way through the Getting Started course at Wealthy Affiliate, which goes hand in hand with what I’m teaching you here. If you’ve been following along with those videos, you should have already chosen a niche and have setup your first site.

Chances are, you started with one of the free domains provided by WA. If so, that’s great. I want to take this lesson to go into a little more detail about domains, hosting, and how it all fits together.

Unique Domain vs. Free Domain

Before you launch your website, there’s one very important decision you have to make: are you going to setup your site on a unique domain or a free subdomain?

  • A unique domain looks like:
  • A free subdomain looks like:

As you watch the video lessons for this segment, you’ll learn how to setup a free website using Siterubix. This is a great option for many people, and if you’re building your site on a budget, it’s the way to go.

However, this is the one place where I shy away from the video trainings. Personally, my view is that if you’re building a website, you should build it for the long term. Unique domains are more professional and rank better in search engines, which ultimately makes your life easier (and your business more profitable).

Considering that having your own domain and hosting costs a maximum of $60-70 per year, it’s an easy decision for most people, and an investment that will very quickly pay for itself.

Setting Up A Unique Domain

In my opinion, the best route is to go ahead and set up your unique domain.

There are two routes to go. The first (and easiest) is to stick with the Wealthy Affiliate platform. If you’ve already gotten started with your free site through WA, then porting that site over to your own domain is super simple. Watch this video to understand how:

It’s important to understand that the hosting at Wealthy Affiliate is only available for premium members, which means that if you haven’t signed up yet you’ll want to be making that decision soon.

If you like the courses and want to continue, there’s a ton of next-level material in the premium courses, and the hosting capabilities is just one of many great features. It’s a no brainer in my opinion.

But, if you’re not ready to commit to going premium at WA, there are other hosting options. My favorite alternate provider is Bluehost. They have a great deal where you can get a free domain when you purchase hosting. That saves you about $15 a year, and their hosting plans start at only a few dollars per month. You can even grab this 30% discount to get started for only $2.99 per month.

Reliable hosting doesn’t come cheaper than that.

Once you have your hosting, just follow the steps provided in your welcome email to get setup. With Bluehost (and many other hosting providers) you can install WordPress with a single click, and have your website up and running quickly and easily.

Setting Up A Free Domain

If you’d rather wait and get your feet wet with a free domain first, then follow the instructions provided in this video. They have a free sitebuilder tool that will get you setup in a few easy clicks.

Note that while this is fine for starting out, you do eventually want to have your own domain for your website.

Tasks and Next Steps

By the end of this lesson, you should have your very own website up and running! Complete the following to make sure you’re on the right track:

  1. Make a decision about which hosting option you’ll take.
  2. Launch your website using Bluehost or the WA Sitebuilder Tool
  3. Follow the steps in Video 5 to configure your website.

And that’s it! Stay tuned for more on driving traffic, creating content, and making sales!
