In my opinion, this is something that even the top rated affiliate trainings gloss over, so I’m going to spend a few minutes outlining why I think it’s so important.
Good Goals Help You Plan
To me, goal setting is simply the first step in creating a solid strategic plan for your business.
I use the following mantra when it comes to planning:
Think backwards, work forwards.
What I mean by that phrase is that you should always start with the end in mind (as a side note, if you’ve never read Think and Grow Rich, I highly recommend it for this reason).
Objectives, or goals, are the reason you’re in business, and by beginning with those goals, you can more clearly outline the steps that you need to take to get there.
At the same time, you can’t begin with the assumption that those goals will automatically occur. This is what I mean by “work forwards.” You need to start with what you have today, and gradually, over time, you’ll be able to work diligently towards your aims.
Reasonable Goals Keep You Motivated
The other reason I think goal setting is so important is because goals are an incredibly important motivator.
The way I see it, there are two halves to why goals motivate:
- They provide the reason you’re doing any work at all, and
- They relieve stress when the going gets tough.
I think most people are generally aware of point #1 above, but #2 is a little less obvious.
To me, goals relieve stress because they help remind you not only what you’re trying to achieve, but when you’re going to achieve it by.
This is why it’s super important to have long term goals that have a timeline associated with them.
You shouldn’t get stressed if you have a bad month in month 6, when your goal isn’t even applicable until month 12.
I find that when it comes to websites, this helps me get over that initial lull in building a new site, when traffic comes in spurts and growth is stagnant.
Getting through those early days is a crucial step to the success of any site, so I plan my goals beyond that timeframe in order to help me through.
